Fresh Green Peas curry in coconut gravy

Winter is the season for Fresh Green Peas in India. Unfortunately we don’t get to enjoy that freshness here in the United States. But fortunately there are fresh english peas that we sometimes get in grocery stores to satisfy our taste buds. Sharing today is my favorite Green peas curry. Hope you like it. Matar Usal in Instant Pot

Malavani style Matar Usal in coconut based gravy cooked in Instat Pot

  • Instant Pot
  • 2 cups Fresh English Green Peas (Don't use frozen peas)
  • 2 Onion:Medium sized (Finely chopped)
  • 5 Garlic cloves
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 3 green chilis
  • 2 tomatoes (Pureed)
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala OR Kitchen King Masala
  • 1 tbsp Maharashtrian Goda Masala
  • 1.5 cup Fresh grated coconut (ground to fine paste)
  • 1 Tbsp Jaggery
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  1. Cook the green peas in IP: Manual 6min NPR and keep aside.

  2. If you don't have Instant Pot , steam the green peas in pressure cooker until they are tender but not mushy

  3. Turn IP into sauté mode

  4. When the indicator shows hot, Heat oil and sauté the onions until golden. 

  5. Make a paste of ginger, garlic and green chilis and add it to the oil.

  6. Sauté until the raw smell goes away.make sure they don’t burn  

  7. Add chilli powder, turmeric powder, goda masala and kitchen king masala (garam masala) and fry for another minute.

  8. Add the puréed tomato and sauté until the oil separates.

  9. Add coconut paste and fry further until oil separates.

  10. Then add cooked peas ,  water as per your choice , jaggery and salt and bring the curry to a boil 

  11. Keep the IP insert covered with a glass lid 

  12. Garnish with fresh cilantro ( coriander leaves)

You can make the same recipe in a pan without IP. Just follow the same steps from step 3 onwards

Chicken tikka in a pan

Perfect appetizer or side dish that pleases your last minute guests

For Marination

  • 1 tsp Ginger paste
  • 1 tsp Garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp kashmiri red chili powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp Tandoori Chicken Masala
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp Besan or Gram flour
  • 1 cup yogurt (thick or best if you have hung curd)
  • 2 tbsp Heavy Whipping Cream or Fresh cream
  • 1/2 Lemon juice
  • salt ( as per taste)
  • 1/2 tsp Red food color (Optional)
  • 1 Lb Boneless skinless chicken breast ( cut into bite size pieces)

For cooking

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1 Green pepper (diced)
  • 1 small onion (diced)
  • 1/2 small lemon
  • Cilantro (To garnish)
  1. In a bowl, add all ingredients for marination and mix well until chicken pieces are well coated.

  2. Marinate chicken for at least 30 min

  3. Heat a grill pan, add 3 Tbsp butter & oil

  4. Add marinated chicken and let it cook on medium flame 

  5. Add green pepper , onion, remaining butter and give it a final toss.

  6. Don’t overbook the veggies they should remain crunchy to eat

  7. Squeeze lemon juice on top

  8. Garnish with Cilantro

Stuffed Eggplant in IP / नैवेद्यासाठी भरली वांगी

Maharashtrian Stuffed Eggplant without Onion or Garlic cooked in Instant Pot

  • Instant Pot

Eggplant Stuffing

  • 8 Eggplants
  • 2 cups Freshly grated coconut (I prefer fresh coconut over frozen)
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1.5 tbsp Goda masala
  • Tamarind (size of half small lime)
  • 1.5 tbsp Jaggery
  • 1/2 cup Cilantro (Coriander) (Chooped)
  • Salt (To taste)

For cooking

  • 3 Tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Asofoetida (Hing) (1 pinch)
  • Curry leaves (Few)

Stuff Eggplants

  1. Give deep slits in the eggplant in a + shape and place them in water

  2. Grind  everything in theingredients from coconut to salt (except cilantro ) to a fine paste. Add aslittle water as possible as we want a thick paste

  3. Make sure you add a little extra salt than your usual taste as we won't be adding any additional salt later in the gravy.

  4. Keep the paste aside in a bowl and add fresh finely chopped cilantro 

  5. Nowstuff the masala into the eggplants and keep them aside

Cooking instructions

  1. TurnIP in sauté mode more

  2. When the indicator shows hot,add oil followed by mustard seeds, hing, curry leavesand  addthe stuffed eggplants

  3. Gentlymix to coat the eggplants  andadd the left over stuffing

  4. Mix itall well again gently and also add some water just to cover the eggplants 

  5. When the gravy comes to boil, switch off the sauté mode 

  6. Manual 4 min sealing on 

  7. NPRand check for your gravy’s consistency. If you feel it’s watery, turn the sauté mode back on and let the gravy thicken

  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro

  • I also add baby potatoes or small thin skinned potatoes cut in half along with eggplants for my family members who don’t like eggplants 
  • When directly making this recipe in IP sometime the pressure valve doesn’t rise even if the counter starts. In that case open the IP once counter finishes . Check if eggplants are cooked if not , mix the curry well and then again do manual 4-7min 
  • If you don’t have Instant pot, you can make the same recipe in a pan or in a pressure cooker but the cook time depends upon the appliance you are using to cook.

माझ्या आठवणीतलं नवरात्र

माझ्या आठवणीतलं नवरात्र

नवरात्र म्हटलं कि आपल्याला आठवतात गरबा ,दांडिया , दुर्गा पूजा किंवा नवरात्रीचे नऊ रंग. फार फार तर नवरात्राचे उपवास. त्याचा कारण म्हणजे हि सगळी आजकालची मॉडर्न कमर्शिअल सेलिब्रेशन्स आहेत. मीडिया मध्ये त्यांचीच चर्चा असते आणि सगळ्यात महत्वाच म्हणजे उत्सवाची धमाल लुटता येते पण माझ्या लहानपणी या सगळया गोष्टींपैकी फक्त दांडिया आणि शारदीय नवरात्र या दोनच गोष्टी  मला माहित होत्या.

माझी रांगोळी

नवरात्राचे नऊ रंग कोणते ? ते दरवर्षी वेगवेगळ्या दिवशी वेगवेगळे का असतात याच कारण शोधण्याचा मी खूप प्रयत्न केला पण मला काही satisfactory कारण सापडल नाही. कुठल्यातरी न्युज चॅनेल ने ८-१० वर्षांपूर्वी हा नवीन ट्रेण्ड सुरु केला आणि मग ट्रेण्ड म्हणून सगळे नऊ दिवस नऊ रंग घालायला लागले.

शेवटी मला अस कळलं  कि घटस्थापना ज्या दिवशी होते त्या वारानुसार रंग सुरु होतात आणि त्यानंतर एक ठराविक सिक्वेन्स फॉलो केला जातो. म्हणजे यंदा गुरुवारी नवरात्र सुरु झाल तर गुरुवारचा रंग पिवळा तिथून हा सिक्वेन्स सुरु झाला. आणि मग त्या नंतर हिरवा, राखाडी, केशरी,पांढरा ,लाल,निळा,गुलाबी आणि जांभळा या अनुक्रमाने रंग होते. पण ते तसच का हे मात्र काही मला अजून समजल नाही.

पण माझ्या आठवणीतल नवरात्र मात्र खूपच वेगळ आहे. आता तसं नवरात्र साजर करून आणि त्याचा experience घेऊन पण २०-२२ वर्ष झाली. माझ्या आठवणीतला घटस्थापनेचा दिवस आणि यंदा चा घटस्थापनेचा दिवस किती वेगळा होता. पण अजूनही ती सकाळ,तो दिवस आठवला कि वाटतं थोड आयुष्य रिवाइंड करता आलं असतं तर किती बरं झालं असत नाही ? तस माझं contribution म्हणजे आईला वरच्या कामात मदत करणे एवढंच होतं. पण सहामाही परीक्षेचा अभ्यास न करता ती सगळी काम करायला मला भारीच आवडायचं.

आमचं  कोकणातलं एक छान कौलारू टुमदार घर होत. त्यामुळे माझी मुख्य कामं म्हणजे अंगणात आणि तुळशीसमोर सडा घालणे आणि रांगोळी काढणे , दुर्वा वेचून आणणे आणि त्या निवडणे, फुलांचे हार करणे हि असायची. फुलांचा हार करणे हि पण एक प्रोसेस होती . म्हणजे घटाला फक्त झेंडूची फुलंच लागायची. त्यातली एका पाकळीची किंवा लहान अंगणातून काढलेली फुलं हि नुसती वाहायला वेगळी करायची आणि छान गोंडेदार झेंडू हारासाठी वेगळे ठेवायचे.

रोज ९ फुलांचा हार करायचा असे त्यामुळे जर पिवळी आणि केशरी रंगाची झेंडू मिळाली तर alternate रंग घालून खूपच सुंदर हार व्हायचा. आई-बाबांनी  , दर्शनाला येणाऱ्या पाहुण्यांनि किंवा गुरुजींनी त्या हाराचं कौतुक केलं कि भारी आनंद व्हायचा. किती छान असत ना आपल बालपण? छोट्या छोट्या गोष्टी पण किती आनंद देऊन जात.

माझ अजून एक आवडतं काम असायच ते म्हणजे विहिरीवरून पिण्याचं पाणी भरणे. आमच्या घरापासून साधारण १/४ किलोमीटर वर रहाटाची विहीर होती. नवरात्रात रोज ३-४ कळश्या पिण्याच पाणी भरणे हे पण माझं काम असायच. एरवी घरकामाची बाई भरत असे पाणी पण नवरात्रात तिला स्वयंपाकघरात प्रवेश नसायचा मग माझा turn. माझ्यासाठी आईने एक खास हलकी कळशी पण आणून ठेवली होती. विहिरीच्या बाजूलाच थोड्या अंतरावर कपडे धुण्याचा चौथरा होता आणि त्याच्या आजूबाजूला सोलिया च्या फुलांची (Ginger Lily) खूप सारी झाड होती. कोकणात पावसाळ्याच्या दिवसात ती फुलांनी नुसती लगडलेली असायची आणि त्याचा सुगंध विहिरीच्या आजूबाजूला दरवळायचा.

विहिरीच्या मागे काही अंतरावर एक ओहोळ होता आणि त्या समोर नारळ,अननस , मसाल्यांचे पदार्थ यांची लागवड केली होती. मी कधी कधी दुपारी चेन्ज म्हणून अभ्यास करायला या विहिरी जवळ येऊन बसायचे. पक्षांचे सुंदर आवाज ,नारळाच्या बागेचा आडोसा आणि या फुलांचा सुवास खूप प्रसन्न करून टाकायचा.

नवरात्रात एखादा दिवस शाळेला रविवारची  सुट्टी यायची पण रोज मनात नसतानाही शाळेला जायला लागायच. पण शाळेत पण आईने केलेला नैवेद्य डोक्यात असायचा. आई मला पोळी भाजी देतच असे डब्यात पण पूर्ण नैवेद्य ताटावर बसून खाण्याची मजा त्या डब्याला कुठे? आणि त्यातूनही माझी सर्वात आवडती “घवल्याची खीर” . आई नवरात्र पूर्वी डबा भरून कणकेचे घवले करून ठेवायची आणि म्हणायची “त्या देव्हाऱ्यातली देवी तर माझी खीर येऊन खाणार नाही पण माझ्या या छोट्या देवीला तरी मनापासून खाऊ दे. रोजचे ४ नैवेद्य असायचे त्या सगळ्या नैवेद्यांवरची खीर मी एकटीच खात असे .

बाबांचा ९ दिवस उपवास असायचा. तेंव्हा त्यांना उपवासाचे पदार्थ खाऊन उष्णता होऊ नये म्हणून आई रोज रात्री ड्राय फ्रुटस भिजत घालत असे आणि सकाळी चहा ऐवजी बाबाना ड्राय फ्रुटस चं दूध द्यायची. माझा उपवास नसला तरी ते दूध मला फार आवडायचं.

९ दिवस अखंड ज्योतीचा नंदादीप असायचा. त्या नंदादीपाची वात बनवणं हे पण एक फार स्किलफुल काम होतं. मी कळत्या वयात आल्यावर मला ते काम पण आईने सोपवलं.

घटस्थापना आणि खंडेनवमी ला सवाष्ण ब्राह्मण , पंचमी ला कुवारणी असं नवरात्रात रोज कोणी ना कोणी तरी जेवायला असायचच. आई सप्तमीला देवीच्या देवळात जाऊन ओटी भरायची आणि अष्टमीला कडाकण्या करून त्यांचा हार घटाजवळ बांधायची. ती प्रथा का आहे ते मात्र मला अजून माहित नाही. दुसऱ्या दिवशी नवरात्रीची उत्तरपूजा झाली कि मग त्या कडाकण्या खायला मात्र खूप आवडायच्या.

एक ना दोन नवरात्राच्या असंख्य आठवणी अजून माझ्या स्मृतीत जिवंत आहेत. त्यावेळी आजच्या सारखे स्मार्टफोन्स असते तर ते सुंदर दिवस कॅमेऱ्यात कैद करून ठेवता आले असते.तसे ते माझ्या मनाच्या कॅमेऱ्यात permanently saved आहेतच पण तुम्हाला दाखवायला आज या शब्दांचा आधार घ्यावा लागला.बघा तुम्हाला दिसतंय का माझ्या आठवणातील नवरात्र !

7 steps and 1 habit to be a daily workout person

How do you manage to complete 100 miles each month consistently with a full-time job?

How do you keep yourself motivated to do it every single day?

I get these questions a lot and believe me, when I started this journey in 2013, I had the same questions about the people who work out consistently every single day. I was convinced that they are crazy people and have no other personal life. But the pandemic WFH has been a blessing in disguise that helped me find the answers and develop this passion for outdoor walking

You must be wondering “then what changed in just a few years?” It’s just that I learnt from my mistakes and developed just one habit “Self-Discipline”.

Self Discipline

It all starts from you and your own self determination to change something which is not right. Here are 7 steps that helped me develop that habit.

1. Self – Evaluation

First, figure out which is the right workout for YOU. Just because your friend runs every day or goes to a fancy gym every day doesn’t mean that you should do the same thing. Go with your “Niche”.

Think about your job or other life responsibilities. What time of the day best suits your schedule? Will you be able to stick to that schedule most of the days?

If you are thinking about outdoor activities such as walking/ running/ biking, then weather plays an important part too. Like for example in Texas you must start very early that is, on or before sunrise or very late around sun set. Any other time, the heat will make the outdoor experience very unpleasant for you.

2. Set a realistic goal

Ask yourself this question : “Why do you want to work out?” – Do you want to work out to lose weight? Or Do you want to run a marathon? Or Do you just want to work out to have a healthy lifestyle? The answer to this question will help you decide the right type and frequency of your workout

For Example, if you want to run a marathon, simply logging miles every week is not enough, you also need to build your strength to support that endurance Vs if you are working out to lose weight, simply spending hours in gym is not going to help if you don’t control your diet.

3. Plan to achieve your goal

Planning on what needs to be done to achieve the goal is the next step. Simply setting a goal of 70-80 miles a month is not going to help you achieve it. You need to plan each day of that month in advance. Because missing a short 3 mile walk at the beginning of the month could ruin your goal.
Since May of last year, I’m consistently logging 100 miles each month and I still make a daily running plan at the beginning of each month.

4. Workout should be part of your routine

Routine is the key. We eat at least 2 meals every day, we brush each day, take shower each day. But, do we count how many times a month we do these things? No!! right? How silly that will sound ? Because they are part of our routine and something that is needed for a good life. Similarly make work out a part of your routine. A habit that you don’t have to think about doing, it just happens.

5.Start slow, evaluate, and then increase frequency or intensity.

Start slow ! You must have read and heard this before. It’s OK even if its just 2 days a week for first few weeks .It will help you get used to it.

If you start working out 5 days a week from the beginning, you will not be ready physically or mentally and it will be an invitation to failure. Increase your frequency slowly 1 day at a time. You again have to self- evaluate what works best for you and your lifestyle.

6.Be your own disciplinarian

Discipline is the key for whichever goal or workout you choose. You need to have the discipline to follow what you have planned.

If you are a morning workout person like me, you need a discipline to sleep early every night so that you can get enough sleep.
You need to be disciplined about your water intake, so you don’t get dehydrated. You need to be disciplined each day to make workout your main priority.

7.Compete ONLY with your old self

Evaluating what YOU can do is the most important step because no two people are the same. Don’t workout because your friend is doing it and you don’t want to look guilty of not working out. Do it because you want to improve yourself. Think about what you want to change in your old self.

Lastly, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Don’t overdo it when your body is clearly telling you otherwise. Stop, evaluate, and change the plan that works best for YOU.

As my coach always said, working out consistently or achieving any physical milestone is controlled by your mind than your body.
It’s your mind which keeps reminding you of the pain or uncomfortable feeling when you do something unusal. You need to learn to control that feeling and when you make it a habit, your brain will automatically get used to it.

Discipline is both developed through habit, and it is also required to build a habit.

You need discipline to build a workout habit and you need to develop a habit to build a discipline to work out every day.

जब तक हैं जान ( Until I’m alive )

As I started to take the first bite of Meduvada (Fried lentil donuts ) dipped in sambar, I remembered KZ.. I remembered how this true valentine of mine have been with me for years through life’s ups & downs .. sorrows & joys !

I know he is my lifelong companion. He will always be there with me until my last breath. Our amazing love story needs to be heard and appreciated !!

Kilozoom KZ as I call him, met me little late in life. Precisely after I got married. My joy & excitement of being with my soulmate, attracted KZ towards me. So much so that his love grew by 10s in just a few months of me being a married women. I was so stupid to not even notice it. After all, I never had someone like KZ being attracted to me before…

But KZ’s love was not going to be deterred by that. He continued to shower his love. Slowly and steadily, without my knowledge KZ became a part of me!

Then few years later, I got pregnant & KZ was ecstatic … He must, right? Being pregnant is the best thing that can happen to a women and my valentine was right there to share this excitement … As my baby was growing inside me, so was KZ ! His love reached to its max during those 39 weeks .. he did share some love with my baby but majority of his love was purely mine.. That’s how blessed I’m!

People around me started noticing his love on me and I started getting compliments (comments) about how the pregnancy and the new born gave me a new healthy glow… Little did they know , what they were seeing was KZ’s magical love all around me.

It actually started getting overwhelming and I decided that now is the time to set KZ free. Sometimes too much love is also injurious to health.

KZ was never going to understand that. I signed up for gym membership…. I googled and learnt that one should not start doing too much too soon so I decided I’ll just start with 30 min 3 days a week at the gym…I also decided that I’ll check on KZ only twice a week on Wednesday morning and Sunday morning.

In the first week, Monday, Tuesday went by awesome with 30min of Treadmill walks each day ! I was excited to check on KZ.On Wednesday morning as I hopped on to the scale and KZ came out triumphed. He improved his love for me by 3 pounds in just 2 days ….

I should have realized the power of his love at that time but No!! instead, I started searching the internet of why this happened … I learnt a new term water weight! when you start exercising for the first time, you tend to gain! No wonder KZ won this time but I was going to find a way to win.

Diet and exercise should go hand in hand is another universal truth. So, I started searching for all the cool, quick results diets out there. Maybe it was the rice as most of them suggested. I quit rice for almost 3 weeks. Suddenly quitting my most beloved food made my nights sleepless and even when I used to get some sleep, I used to dream about all the yummy rice dishes. KZ was sticking by my side all through this. I finally gave up on my no-rice mission & KZ was very supportive. He never bragged about his wins. He just stayed with me all through it.

Then I learnt about this amazing diet advice about eating every 2-3 hrs. Celebrities were swearing by it and most amazing thing, there was no restriction on what you must or what you cannot eat. I knew that was the thing for me. When I’ll start eating enough, KZ will understand that I don’t need so much love. I started packing 4-5 boxes of food to go through my work day.

With so much efforts of eating home cooked food, I knew this time I’ll show KZ that I can win too. For 5 weeks I didn’t check on KZ because I want to show him the big difference. And finally it was that Sunday when I checked again …..

Guess what ??? KZ won again … in last 5 weeks, his love grew by 6 pounds.

This can’t be happening to me … I was heartbroken. It’s been 10 years since and KZ is still with me. His love has only grown exponentially & I’ve accepted it whole heartedly! Me and my darling BODY FAT “Kilozoom” are going to stay with each other जब तक है जान (Until I’m alive) ..

The Un-worshipped Durga

प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी।

तृतीयं चन्द्रघंटेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम् ।।

पंचमं स्क्न्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च ।

सप्तमं कालरात्रीति महागौरीति चाष्टमम् ।।

नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः ।।

I have grown up listening to and chanting this Navdurga mantra. Especially during the Navratri days. This mantra states the 9 forms of goddess Durga / Parvati that are worshipped by millions of Hindu’s worldwide.Not sure how these 9 forms became the “to-be worshiped” form of god during these particular 9 days but to me there is a Durga in each and every woman that I know !

Today’s woman is a true “दशभुजा” ( The one with 10 hands).She can cook delicious meal, serve to the family, clean up , load the laundry etc. all while discussing the business strategy on a conference call

She is the “Shailaputri” when she stands up for the honor and pride of her children, husband and house.

She is “Brahmacharini” when she devotes herself to whatever she does be it being a mom or being a corporate person.

She is “Chandraghanta” when she can do anything to protect her loved ones .She does it everyday by keeping everything around them neat, clean,sanitized, fresh and away from any danger.

She is “Kushmanda” when she bares the pain of giving birth to the new life and nurtures that life selflessly until her last breath.

She is “Skandamata” when she showers her love,affection and care on each & every person in the family.

She is “Katyayani” when she stands up to protect herself from those who emotionally or physically try to demoralize her.

She is “Kalratri” when she becomes a “kaal” for those who have evil eye on her nest that she calls home.

She is “Mahagauri” when she becomes the beautiful soulmate of her spouse, a loving mom for her children, a caring daughter/daugther-in-law for her parents/in-laws and a best friend for her cousins.

She is “Siddhadatri” when the she converts the house into the “home” for her family.

These durga’s are all around us in form of our moms , wives, sisters, co-workers , house helpers but have you seen any of them being worshiped ? What is the meaning of Pooja (worship)? It is the form of appreciating the goodness and recognizing the person’s worth.

I would like to worship all these forms of Durga’s in my life .. My mom to start with , my sisters, my friends, my aunts ,my cousins, my female co-workers and all those who blessed me in numerous ways.

I think worshiping these real life Durga’s, is equivalent to worshiping those idols in the temples. The real durga lies in each and every woman. It is important for her loved ones to recognize her worth and worship her by appreciating her efforts. She just wants those few caring words for herself. Not on a special day or few special days but every day.

It is also important for each one of us ladies to believe in ourselves so that the world around us starts believing in us. We should all stand for each other at all times because in my opinion no durga should remain un-worshiped !

Under the weather kind of day

Have you ever met a person that loves Monday? Especially for those working in corporate five days a week schedule, Mondays are always most dreadful days of the week. No matter if you are a freshman or have been doing it for your entire life ! It’s hard to find a person who waits for a Monday.. unless of-course it’s your day off in the week.

Oh I know, I know there are people who don’t accept it and try to keep the positive attitude and all but honestly do they really look forward to Mondays? Well, at least I’m not one of those and I have no guilt in accepting that I hate Mondays. I’ve been working in corporate world for almost 19 years now but never have I ever loved Mondays (when its not a holiday).

Let me tell you a story of one such Monday. As usual I started getting the “Monday morning blues” on Sunday afternoon and not to mention, I had already mentally spoiled my Sunday evening thinking about the 7 meetings starting 8am the next day. All of a sudden, I started feeling bloated ! Was it the dinner party last night? May be I ate little too much of my favorite appetizer Or probably the drink. My stomach started rumbling and I was not sure if I could attend the important meeting that I myself scheduled (actually moved from last week) for tomorrow.

After trying hard to fall asleep for hours I finally was able to fall asleep sometimes after midnight and when I opened my eyes next morning it was already bright and sunny outside. I got up hurriedly.

Wait ! what happened to my alarm? Oh.. looks like I forgot to set it up last night among my “Monday overthinking”. It’s 7:45am already ? How can I get ready for the 8am meeting ? I need some time for my morning chores before I can get online. After all working from home doesn’t mean that you hop out of the bed and sit in front of the computer.

“Stop thinking Pooja and get moving..” I said to myself but my body had some different plans. It was not letting me move. My neck was stiff as a rock. I tried hard to get up but while struggling with my neck, I got a cramp in my calves. So badly that the cramp in my legs and stiffness in my neck threw me down right back into the bed.

I quickly realized that I’m not going to make it for 8am and was very doubtful if I could be functional for the 8:30 or the other meetings following it. That was the moment, when I felt super excited even in pain. The excitement of calling in sick for the most dreadful day of the week “Monday”. I didn’t even bother to try waking up again .. just grabbed my work phone drafted an OOO message and declined all the meetings for the day ! I can’t explain the joy of declining all the meetings for the day and looking at my all open outlook calendar with a purple OOO background color. I made a best decision for myself that morning and I was going to make the best of this decision today. For once, I was trying to “love” Monday

I decided to sleep in more. There is no rush now. I won’t be able to go for a walk anyways with my hurting neck and cramping leg so why not get more sleep? Yes !! but my body was not going to make it that easy for me. I tried super hard but I couldn’t go back to sleep. My dear husband going shower and getting ready for work was not at all helping either. Well, he didn’t know my plan so I didn’t blame him !

At around 8:30 after struggling hard , I got out of bed and by the time I got down to the kitchen for morning tea, it was past 9:30. Who knows what was I doing up in the bedroom for 1 hr but anyways it was my day to relax so I got my tea and went outside in the patio on that beautiful morning! my neck and leg pain was automatically eased after that and I was actually feeling better just by not doing anything

Suddenly my dear husband who was also working from home called me and asked me to go up to the bedroom again! I was in no mood to do that but he pleaded ( which rarely happens btw ) and I went upstairs again only to find a nice hot bath ready for me with scented candles and peaceful music around. It was magical ! I was actually loving this Monday.

As soon as I got into the shower after soaking in the bath tub a shiver ran through my body because the water was ice-cold ! I mean I get that it was winter but what happened to the water heater ? I came out without showering and started calling my husband who was now in his work meeting so couldn’t come out to help

Alas !! I just dried myself and got back to kitchen to fix something for lunch ! I was starving and just then I noticed water dripping on my head from the kitchen ceiling. Now I had to call my husband out of his meeting to check what’s going on! He went up to attic to find it full of hot water everywhere and couldn’t figure out what’s going on.. and then started a search for plumbing company who can send someone urgently

We both were hungry but in between calling various companies, their hold times and 100 questions we just couldn’t order anything either.

At around 3pm we finally got someone who said they will try to come between 6-8pm. By this time our kitchen floor was a huge water puddle and just because the existing problems were not enough I slipped and bammm!!! hit my head hard on the cabinet corner.. I was numb couldn’t feel the pain but could see the blood dripping on the floor. The water puddle around me started turning red and I was dizzying

And just then I woke up with my 5:30am alarm.. the dreadful Monday , all the meetings starting at 8am were all going to be there and no I was not going to have an Under the weather kind of day !

गणपती बाप्पा मोरया

“पूजा, तुला आलाय का एव्हाईट कुलकर्ण्यांकडून ? “
“कशासाठी रे? कोणाचा माइलस्टोन बर्थडे आहे का ?”
“ अगं नाही .. गणपतीच्या आरतीसाठी .. “
“अरे बापरे ऑलरेडी गणपतीचं प्लांनिंग सुरु झाल का? मला लक्षातच आलं नाही यंदा .. कधी येतोय बाप्पा ? थांब कालनिर्णय बघते पटकन ! “
“अरे आत्ताशी जुलै संपतोय आणि गणपती सप्टेंबर च्या सुरुवातीला आहे.. पण अरे एकच वीकएंड येतोय गणपतीच्या आठवड्यात ..”
“आणि एक संध्याकाळ तर आरती साठी गेली कि .. आपण सुध्दा लवकर प्लॅन करायला पाहिजे रे .. नाहीतर सगळ्या आरत्या ओव्हरलॅप होतील आणि लोकांची धावपळ होईल कुठे कुठे जाणार ते घरातल्या गणपतीचं करून ! “
“बरं झालं आज या एव्हाईट मुळे वेक अप कॉल मिळाला आपल्याला !”


करोना पूर्व काळात,गेले कितीतरी वर्ष आम्हा उभयतांमध्ये जुलै – ऑगस्टच्या सुमारास होणारा हा नेहमीचा संवाद ! मग यानंतर आमच्यासारखाच विचार करणारे आमचे स्नेही आणि आम्ही असे १५-२० एव्हाईट आणखी पाठवतो आणि गणपती बाप्पाच्या आगमनाची चाहूल साऱ्या ऑस्टिनकरांना लागते. मुलांच्या समर व्हेकेशन संपून याच दरम्यान नुकताच नवीन वर्ग सुरु झालेला असतो त्यामुळे त्यांची नवीन वेळापत्रकं , स्कूल सप्प्लाइज , काही नवीन काही जुने वर्ग मित्र आणि शिक्षक या सर्व गोष्टींशी जुळवून घेण्याची लगबग सुरु असते … त्यातच आता समर व्हेकेशन संपायच्या आत या मुलांच्या कडून गणपती मखर किंवा किमान आरास करण्याची थोडी तयारी करून घ्यायची असते. ऑफिसमध्ये तर सगळे पूर्ण वर्षात करणार नाहीत तेवढ्या जोमाने काम करू लागतात कारण ते नुकतेच एक मोठी सुट्टी एन्जॉय करून आलेले असतात .

आम्हा बायकांचे व्हाट्सऍप मेसेजेस सुरु होतात .. कशासाठी ? अहो ती तर सगळ्यात महत्त्वाची गोष्ट असते .. गणपती उत्सव ही तर वर्षातली आमची हक्काची वेळ मराठमोळं नटण्यासाठी .. आमच्या व्हाट्सऍप ग्रुप मध्ये आम्ही काय काय ठरवतो हा एक वेगळा लेख होईल पण कोणाच्या आरती ला कुठल्या प्रकारची साडी नेसायची हा एक मेन पॉईंट असतोच. मग संक्रांतीच्या हळदी कुंकवानंतर क्लोझेट मध्ये लपलेल्या साड्या ,ब्लॉउज आणि परकरांना हवा लागते .. त्यातले अर्धे ब्लॉउज होत नसतात मग ज्या साड्या नेसायच्या आहेत त्यांच्या ब्लॉउज च रिपेअरिंग सुरु होतं. किती वेळखाऊ काम आहे ते पण आता ठरवलंय ना मग तशाच साड्या नेसायच्या . एखाद्या वर्षी जर भारतात जाऊन आलो असू तर मग चंगळच ! कारण साड्या आणि ज्वेलरी चा नवीन स्टॉक असतो मिरवायला…


हे सगळं होईपर्यंत गणपती उत्सव आठवड्यावर येऊन ठेपतो आणि मग घाई सुरु होते खऱ्या प्लांनिंगची. सगळ्यात मोठी तयारी म्हणजे आरतीचा महाप्रसाद .. जवळ जवळ १५०-२०० लोकं असणार आहेत प्रसादाला मग सगळं कसं व्यवस्थितच असायला हवं ! यंदा आपण काहीतरी वेगळा मेनू ठेवू अशा कल्पनेने सुरु झालेला आमचा (वि) संवाद अखेर पुन्हा त्याच मेनू वर संपतो.


“पुरणपोळी मुंबईमधून येईल का २ आठवड्यात ?”
“हो येईल कि .. गेल्या वर्षी नाही का आली होती ! “
“पण यंदा पाऊस जोरदार आहे. कस्टम्स मध्ये उशीर झाला किंवा खराब झाली तर ? “
“नाही होणार गं”
“ठीक आहे मग गोडाचं ठरलं तर मग” “बाकी सगळं स्वाद मध्ये ऑर्डर करू” “आणि वरण भात कोशिंबीर घरात. ” Done
“अरे हो .. टेबल आणि खुर्च्या पण ऑर्डर करायच्या आहेत ना रेंटल कंपनी कडे ? नाहीतर ऐनवेळी म्हणेल अव्हेलेबल नाहीत म्हणून”
“पण पूजा वेदर बघितल आहेस का? गेल्या वर्षी सारखा धो धो पाऊस आला तर ?? काय गोंधळ झाला होता आठवतंय ना ? “
” हो खरंच .. सध्या तरी २०% आहे चांसेस ऑफ प्रेसिपिटेशन तो गणपती बाप्पा करून घेईल सगळं ! ऑलरेडी १७० आर एस व्ही पी आल्या आहेत. टेन्शन येतय रे.. “
“अगं आत्ताच म्हणालीस ना गणपती बाप्पा करून घेईल सगळं !”


अस म्हणता म्हणता हरतालिकेचा दिवस येतो आणि आरास ,रांगोळी सगळं करता करता बाप्पाना आणायची वेळ कधी येते कळतच नाही. मग वर्षभर पिशवीत घालून ठेवलेली गांधी टोपी निघते.


“१ २ ३ ४ गणपतीचा जयजयकार ” असं म्हणत मोठ्या थाटामाटात बाप्पा घरातल्या चौरंगावर विराजमान होतात. घरात जणू काही एक नवीन चैतन्य आल्यासारखा वाटतं. घरातला खालचा मजला प्रसन्न आणि स्वर्गीय वाटायला लागतो … झोपायच्या आधी उद्या कोणाकोणाकडे आरती ला जायचा आणि ते कुठल्या वेळी जायचं याचा आराखडा बाप्पा समोर बसूनच मंडल जातो .. कुठे, किती वेळ आरती असेल तिथून दुसऱ्या ठिकाणी जायला किती वेळ लागेल हे सगळं गुगल मॅप वर बघून ठेवल जातं.


गणपती चा दिवस तर माझ्या मते वर्षातला सगळ्यात ऊर्जेचा आणि प्रसन्न दिवस असतो. तोरण , हार, फुल , उदबत्ती, धूप ,कपूर सगळं सगळं कसं एकदम हेव्हनली ! अमोलचा तिथीने वाढदिवस पण याच दिवशी असतो त्यामुळे त्याच्या वाढदिवसाचा मेनू नेहमी गणपती बाप्पाचा आवडता मेनू .. उकडीचे मोदक , बटाट्याची भाजी, कोशिंबीर, वरण-भात आणि सगळ्यात आवडत्या उकडीच्या तिखट फाऱ्या .. दरवर्षी आजींच्या हातच्या फाऱ्याची आठवण काढून अमोल मी माझ्या परीने केलेल्या फाऱ्या मनापासून खातो. एवढ सगळं होईपर्यंत माझी बॅटरी मात्र पूर्णपणे डाउन झालेली असते पण लवकरच आरती मॅरेथॉन सुरु होणार असते आणि थोडावेळ बसून मी माझ्या पहिल्या दिवसाच्या साडी तयारी ला लागते.
माझी वाट बघत अमोल आपली झांज गळ्यात घालून गाडीत बसतो आणि खऱ्या अर्थाने सुरु होतो आमचा गणेशोत्सव … रोज किमान २-3 घरी तरी आरती असते.. अगदी वीक डे मध्ये सुद्धा ! पण सगळे बाप्पाच्या उत्सवात तल्लीन असतात. प्रसादाच्या निमित्ताने बऱ्याच दिवसांनी मैत्रिणींबरोबर गप्पा मारत मारत जेवण होत. आणि मग साडी पिक्चर्स आणि सेल्फीज तर आहेतच.


या सगळ्या दिवसात जो सर्वात जास्त गडबडीचा दिवस असतो तो म्हणजे घरच्या आरतीचा .. दरवर्षी येत असला आणि पार पडत असला तरी आदल्या २ रात्री झोप फारशी लागताच नाही. काही विसरत नाही ना? सगळ्यांची व्यवस्था नीट होईल ना? घर साफ झालय ना? जेवण नीट आणि वेळेवर येईल ना? एक ना दोन कित्येक चिंता सतावत असतात पण गणपती बाप्पा सगळं नीट करवतो आणि वर्षातला एक मोठा सोहळा पार पडतो.. एव्हाना ४-५ दिवस झालेले असतात आणि घरच्या बाप्पाला निरोप द्याची वेळ येते .. पुढच्या वर्षी लवकर या म्हणत घराच्या बाप्पाला निरोप दिला तरी लगेच कुठेतरी आरती ला जायचा असतंच .. पण जेंव्हा रात्री त्या आरत्या संपवून घरी येतो आणि बाप्पाच्या टेबलावर अंधार बघतो तेंव्हा एकदम पोरकं झाल्या सारख वाटतं !


“अरे बाप्पा गेला कि आपल्या घरी .. आपण नीट केलं ना रे सगळं? कि आपल्या गडबडीत काही राहून गेलं ?”
” या ५ दिवसात क्षणभर उसंत नाही मिळाली त्याच्या समोर बसायला.. चुकलंच बघ. ” नकळत डोळ्यात पाणी तरळून जातं
” अगं पण बाप्पा आहे कि इथेच देव्हाऱ्यात .. जा गप्पा मार त्याच्याशी मनसोक्त.. “
” आणि तोच आहे ना आपल्या सगळ्या चुका माफ करणारा.. तूच म्हणतेस ना? आवाहनं ना जानामी न जानामी तवार्चानं ….. “
“हं , तेही आहेच !”


८व्या – ९ व्या दिवशी जेंव्हा शेवटच्या घरातली आरती होते तेंव्हा मात्र खरंच जाणवत कि बाप्पा ने एकत्र आणलेले आपण सगळे आता पुन्हा आपापल्या आयुष्यात मग्न होणार पुढल्या वर्षी बाप्पा परत येईपर्यत …


२०२०-२०२१ ही
वर्षच या उत्सवाच्या गणतीत नाही. कदाचित त्यामुळेच यंदा हा अनुभव लिहिण्यासाठी वेळ मिळाला.. आता आफ्टर-करोना पुढच्या गणेशोत्सवाच काय स्वरूप असेल तो बाप्पाचं जाणे ..

Experience the Shadow

21st August 2017 : The day when I experienced a magic

You must have heard about solar eclipse, the diamond ring, the totality , the Baily’s beads. You must also have seen them online on YouTube, NASA’s broadcast and many other channels.You should have watched this most marvelous and awe-inspiring nature’s event many times too. But have you experienced “Being under the shadow” yet?

” हा सूर्य आणि हा जयद्रथ ” a famous Marathi quote from a story in Mahabharata, when lord Shri Krishna created a shadow of his Sudarshan Chakra over the sun to create an illusion of sunset aka a total solar eclipse. This was to help Arjuna kill Jaydrath and complete his revenge of his son’s death. I heard this story numerous times as a kid but honestly never realized the feeling everyone on the kurukshetra might have had until I experienced this myself.

I’m & I’ll be forever thankful to Amol for pushing me through my denial to visit the right place at the right time under right conditions. He knew it from his past experience with “Khagol Mandal – A mumbai based group of astronomy enthusiasts” . He had experienced it and rightly so wanted to me and Agastya to get the same experience. But I was not completely wrong with my denial. Only most stupid person will pay $945 for a night’s stay at a shady motel in Jackson Hole, WY. Yes it was us who paid that much for one night’s stay at that place. We tried really hard since January of that year to find a decent place near the path of totality from where we can quickly get to a spot to watch the eclipse but little did we know that there are thousands of other folks who were desperately looking for the same. In fact, they did it much before us. On 22nd August 2016, the Teton parks department opened the reservations for August 2017 and on the same day all the park lodges, camp sites were all booked.But good news was for whatever cost, we found the right place to stay on the night of 20th August.

The partial shadow of the moon started appearing around 10 and we were all set with our camera, camcorder and phone to capture the amazement. It was summer and it was sunny and HOT !Around 11:30 the baily’s beads started appearing and following that was the diamond ring. The temperature dropped by almost 30 degrees and the birds started chirping like they do at the dusk. And suddenly it was all dark… the street lights were turned on automatically… Amol was managing the big camera and the lenses so he handed me the camcorder to record but I was stunned and only thing the I said “Do hell with the recording !! ” And I did experience one of the most amazing couple of minutes in my life.

You do not have to be a scientist Or an astronomer, or a millionaire with fancy telescope to enjoy this experience. But on August 21st, 2017, I realized that being under this shadow of the moon, is one of the most special experiences of anyone’s life. Looking forward to experience this amazement again on April 8th 2024 from right here in Austin,TX.
